Integrating Under Activation Together
A quick start guide
New patterns are easy when we're calm. The real test comes under pressure.
We've been practicing something different. Maybe we've learned to pause before reacting. To name what we're feeling. To stay present instead of retreating.
In calm moments, the new pattern feels natural. We start to believe we've changed.
Then something triggers us. And in a flash, the new pattern is gone. We're back in the old one before we even notice. The shame that follows can be worse than the activation itself. We thought we were past this.
But this isn't failure. It's physiology. The nervous system reaches for its deepest wiring under pressure, the patterns practiced longest. Integration under activation is how we teach the nervous system to trust the new pattern too. Not by avoiding stress, but by gradually building the new pattern's capacity to hold when the ground shakes.
One practice to try
Think of a person in your life who’s open to experimentation, and invite them into trying something new with you.
The low-heat practice
Don't wait for a crisis to test your new patterns. Practice them at lower levels of activation first.
Identify a new pattern you’re building. "We're working on staying present during disagreement." "We're practicing naming emotions instead of acting them out."
Find a mildly activating topic. Something that creates a little heat but not a lot. A minor frustration. A small disagreement. Start there.
Practice the new pattern under that mild activation. Can you pause? Can you name what you're feeling? Can you stay connected?
Notice what works and what slips. Where does the old pattern start pulling? At what level of heat does the new pattern dissolve?
Gradually increase the intensity over time. As the new pattern strengthens at low heat, you can bring it into situations with more charge.
This is graduated exposure for relational patterns. Start where you can succeed and build from there.
